There are two generations of the compact crossover BMW X3 which was originally based on the 3-Series automobile platform. All first generation X3 vehicles were manufactured, under contract, by Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria. BMW transferred production of the second generation X3 to the United States in their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

In 1999, BMW introduced their first luxury crossover SUV which BMW likes to refer to as a SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) to emphasize its on-road ability. The X5 features an all-wheel drive drive-train which comes in either a manual or automatic transmission package.

A mid-size luxury crossover, the x6 was marketed as a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC). The x6 has been available since 2008 as a e71 and e72 Hybrid. Models include the 30dX, 35dX, 35iX, 40dX, 50iX, Hybrid X6, and the X6 M.
