E36 Air Intake Temp Sensor

The temp sensor that plugs into the air box is actually a thermostat. If you have never replaced it I suggest you do. Mine decided to break apart today and sprayed coolant on everything under the hood on the drivers side. It took almost 2 gallons to refill my cooling system. luckily I had just parked in my driveway when i noticed smoke/steam coming from under my hood. Heres a pic of what mine looked like and what its supposed to look like lol. I noticed the date markings on the old one said 10 of 1992 so it was the original one which would explain why it was so brittle. The part was $84.00. part number just for reference is 13 54 1 730 682.

Just a side note too, I was looking in the two holes and noticed a spring in the hole on the left and a metal rod in the hole on the right. I compared the old one with the new one and the old one looked as if it was stuck in the open position with the spring decompressed. could that have been the reason that my car took so long to warm up in the mornings?

I'm pretty sure only the OBDI cars had it.

thats not the same doni.. thats for a thermostat on the throttle body of obd1 e36's mines been long since deleted.. haha ive been running a constant line to the throttle and mine has been fine. i found it to be rediculous to spend money on something that wont effect how the car runs. the effect of this to your long heating time in the morning should be minimal. this works in the same way you thermostat works for your engine. when it gets hot it opens and closes as it cools down. just one more thing that will break down the road.
