Car: 2003 BMW ci manual 5 speed

Bought this car with 65,000 mi. It has had an acceleration problem in first and reverse. At a stop and starting off the accelerator pedal does not seem to accelerate and has a delay and has stalled frequently and is worse in reverse. I know it doesn't have an accelerator cable, wish it did and I wouldn't be writing this. Any suggestions?
If it was automatic, I don't believe you'd feel this as strongly. Help.

Does your BMW have all of the current software updates? If not, it might be your problem.
If it has already had all of the current updates, I have heard of people having this problem when one of their ignition coils are bad...

No CEL? Is it a constant problem or intermittent?

Definitely could be an ignition issue (such as coil packs), but then it should do it in all gears, not just first and reverse.

Also, at the risk of sounding ridiculous: could be CDV and dual-mass flywheel related. It's not "normal" feeling and can sometimes produce hesitation like what you mentioned if you're not millimeter perfect with the pedals. It can be quite frustrating.
